BALDEA (Plataforma Balear de Defensa de los Animales) is the union of several balearic animal protection associations who for many years have been saving thousands of animals from death and torture and who are fighting for respect and dignity towards animals. This platform was established 2005.

BALDEA itself does not have any animal shelters and therefore cannot take in any animals. If you are looking to adopt or house an animal, please contact your nearest animal shelter.

The facts here in the Balearics are as follows

- Each year approx. 5000 domestic animals are being killed, mostly because their owners abandon them. Not counting the hundreds of domestic and wild cats that are being killed on private hunting grounds. See below (1)

Lots of domestic animals live in terrible conditions

Dogs kept tied up on leads or in small cages. Often sick, full of ticks, sometimes without shade or shelter and most of the time lonely

Abandoned non-castrated cats that keep on multiplying and also mistreated by locals even to the point of being poisoned.

Cattle, pigs locked up in stables in unhygienic conditions and without any type of air conditioning or heating.

Exotic animals that suffer because of the ignorance of their owners. Those abandoned by these types of owners then cause servere damage to the local ecosystem (parakeets, turtles, aquarium fish ...).

Animals locked up in zoos and circuses, a suffering that is tolerated by communities in which they are located or visited. Poor and depressed creatures, living in tiny cages and outside of the original habitat and climate.

Further there still exist such cruelties as „bull festivals” where animals are being tortured for hours for the sake of entertaining of a few. Or festivals where young men mostly drunken chase cattle. The festival´s real purpose is the selling of alcohol.

THE MAJORITY OF THE INHABITANTS OF THE ISLANDS DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT AN ANIMAL IS WORTH?

Without a doubt the current situation is deplorable especially when it comes up to the suffering of domestic animals whether on the streets or in municipal shelters where animals really suffer and even get ill. There they are locked up in small cages. Within 15 o 21 days if a new home is not found they are put to sleep – the official argument is the lack of space although for the majority a new owner could be found.

This does not happen in those few communities that cooperate with private animal shelters. In these shelters one always tries to avoid putting animals to sleep although there is a massive overload of animals.

Reasons for this sad situation are:

We believe that the following reasons for this situation are principally:

●      A lack of sensibility and information shown by the population. A complete lack of informational campaigns for the correct maintenance of domestic animals especially in the mass media such as television and radio.

●      The lack of participation by local government. Practically there are very few proposals from their side to improve the situation.

●      The huge amount of animals being sold illegally at weekly markets which should be urgently avoided.

●      The lack of interest from the town halls or local government to apply the existing animal protection laws. There is also no money being supplied for establishing appropriate shelter for homeless and undesired animals.

●      The lack of interest to cooperate together with private animal protection associations or shelters being the ones who carry out in a selfless task the work the administration ought to do.

●              The lack of support from the local government when it comes to legalising or extending private animal shelters.

●              The difficulty in reaching any agreements with the town halls since generally no money is being spent on animal welfare.

Plus the cat population is very high. The reasons are missing birth control measures as well as shelters where owners can bring their animals if they do not want them any longer instead of abandoning them. Their are a few animal protection associations that are being supported by town halls (such as Pollenca and Calvia) and that are therefore able to castrate with a lot of effort cats which means controlling the wild cat colonies.
